Gardens open in Hertfordshire this winter

Josh Carter
15th November 2020

With a third lockdown going on across England, it can be hard to think of what to do on a weekend. One place of solace remains open however – our glorious gardens. While you should not travel far to reach these green wonders, if you are based near the following gardens we certainly recommend a visit to take a moment to breathe, grab a bit of exercise and get outdoors.

St Albans Cathedral grounds

As a place of worship, St Albans Cathedral remains open for private prayer and reflection. The gardens surrounding the cathedral will always be a stunning place to take in the last of the autumn, and will equally be open for those crisp morning or cosy evening walks to refresh from a day spent in. The Cathedral is currently open Monday to Saturday, from 9am to 4pm, and Sunday from 11am to 4pm. Grounds to reflect upon

Ashridge Estate

A firm favourite all year round, the 5000 acres of Ashridge Estate mean that you can keep social distanced and still take in the healing of the trees and outstanding viewpoints on a visit. Not only can you visit Ashridge for a walk to clear your head, with the miles of bridleways you can take your bike along too and get that all important exercise. The visitor centre and shop remain closed currently, and you do not need to book in advance. Acres to traverse

Hertfordshire's Historic Woods

The ancient woodlands south of Hertford are Hertfordshire's only National Nature Reserve (NNR). The four ancient woods that make up the Reserve - Broxbourne Wood, Bencroft Wood, Hoddesdon Park Wood and Wormley Wood - are made for a seasonal wander. Being made up of sessile and hornbeam trees, they are full of sound and colour as the seasons change. Not only can you enjoy a relaxing meander through the woodland there is a sculpture trail to follow, and a walkers guide and several walkers routes can be found online to help you discover the area.

Aylett Nurseries

If you are unable to travel to these gardens for some timeout, you can create your own sanctuary at home. Garden centres have been allowed to stay open for essential items and one of the best is Aylett Nurseries, who offer online shopping. Even if you don’t have an outdoor space, their houseplants from ferns to dragon trees can create one in your living room, bathroom or bedroom! Tranquillity for your room
