Dacorum (1)

Dacorum

From historic sites to action-packed days out, Dacorum on Hertfordshire’s west edge has something for everyone.

Step back in time at Berkhamsted Castle, within the historic market town of Berkhamsted. Dating back to the 11th Century, the site has connections with the likes of Thomas Beckett, William the Conquer, and Richard, Earl of Cornwall.

If you are looking for a more adrenaline-fuelled day out, explore some extreme sports at The XC, which boasts an impressive skate park, a 14m high climbing wall, one of the world’s largest organic indoor caving systems, bouldering and a challenging high ropes course. You might also want to head to The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead where seasoned pros or absolute beginners can enjoy a day on the huge 160m main slope.

The picturesque town of Tring has plenty to offer including the Natural History Museum Tring, an outpost of its larger London cousin, or pay a visit to National Trust’s Ashridge Estate with over 5000 acres of countryside to enjoy for a day out by foot, bike, or horseback.

Visit the multi-award winning Puddingstone Distillery, the first gin distillery in the county and the home of Campfire Gin. Located in Tring near Wilstone Reservoir, the distillery and shop is open on Fridays and Saturdays, so pop in for a free gin tasting experience.

You can also visit Frithsden Vineyard, a boutique English vineyard and winery set in the foothills of the Chilterns, or take a trip to Tring Brewery for award-winning ales.

Spend a morning at Frogmore Paper Mill, the world’s oldest mechanised paper mill, and see paper being made before enjoying a relaxing afternoon taking in a different view of Hemel Hempstead from the Grand Union Canal.  And why not finish off with a drink at one of the many canal-side pubs and restaurants?
